在很久以前，斗牛犬被用于斗牛圈挑逗斗牛。直到19世纪初，斗牛犬被禁止于斗牛活动后，慢慢被饲养成家犬。斗牛犬的头很大，和颈项一样粗。由于皮肤层过长，所以斗牛犬的脸有许多皱褶。
Bulldogs are used to provoke fighting bulls in the bullring. After the early 19th century, bulldogs were prohibited in the bullrings and began to be bred as house pets. A bulldog has a very big head with a neck as wide as its head.
Bulldogs have a long layer of skin which covers their faces in folds.
